Day 5 - Prayer & Fasting - Alms Giving

Today's Scripture Passage: Isaiah 58:6-7

6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Today's Scripture Message:

How, in a country of such wealth and prosperity is there one person without a meal? One family without a home? One child without a pair of shoes that fit or a coat to wear? I have heard “I didn’t make her take those drugs…”, “No one forced him to make bad decisions, end up with a felony and unemployable”,  “They should have paid their bills, and maybe they would not have lost their home…”.  “She shouldn’t have had 7 kids she couldn’t take care of…”  What’s missing in each of these judgments is someone forgot love.  When we reach out in love, it over weights any conclusion and points directly at the heart so desperately in need of care. Trust the charity you offer is faithfully guided and even if you don’t understand how your willingness to assist someone in need is affecting the individual you helped, be assured as Christians, nothing you do in reverence of Him is ever in vein. So the next time you are entering a restaurant and next to the door stands a man asking for food, offer him a meal, even if it means you eat at home this time.

Prayer for the day:
Father, instill in the hearts of every man a love so powerful it yearns to improve. That the eyes of his heart see the need and if able, addresses that need without reluctance as guided by you. That those in need receive that love and return it by reaching out to others as they are able. Surround us all with the understanding of our own personal responsibility to keep our brothers & sisters in life & love,  in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thought for the day:
“This is the true joy in life – being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy”
~George Bernard Shaw

Goal for the Day:
Search within & continue reaching out as your heart elevates, you lift another to join you.

Pastor Dickow’s Fast from Wrong Thinking
Revolution Day 5:

God has called me to help RE-DEFINE prosperity. So, today we are going to continue to fast from the thought that says, “Prosperity is defined by our financial status.”

Let’s change it today:

1.      True Prosperity will change my financial status; but is not defined by my financial status.  3 John 2 says, “Beloved I wish you to prosper and be in health, EVEN AS YOUR SOUL PROSPERS.” As your soul prospers, it improves everything in your life.

2.     True Prosperity is defined by: Soul Prosperity. When your soul is filled with God and His Word, it affects EVERYTHING YOU PUT YOUR HAND TO, including your finances. (Psalm 1:1-3, Joshua 1:7-8)

3.     True Prosperity is defined by: the Presence of God in your life. Remember, Joseph was defined as prosperous, BECAUSE THE LORD WAS WITH HIM. (Genesis 39:2.)

4.     True Prosperity is defined by: The power of answered prayer. John 15:7 says if “God’s Word abides in us, we can ask WHATEVER we wish, and it will be done for us.”

5.      True Prosperity is defined by: Grace and righteousness. Romans 5:17 says in the Amplified version, “Through the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness, we reign as kings in this life.”

6.      True Prosperity is defined by: Seeking first the kingdom of God. Matthew 6:33 says, “...and all these things will be added to you”. Put God first in your thoughts, your money, your priorities—and God will supply!

THINK IT & SAY IT:
I live in Re-defined Prosperity and will not be defined by my financial status. True prosperity will change my financial status; but it starts in my soul. I am filled with God’s Word. I am filled with God’s presence. I am filled the power of answered prayer. I am filled with grace and righteousness. I am filled with the kingdom of God. I am a truly prosperous man or woman, in Jesus’ Name!

Daily Lenten Reflection from
St. Michael of Old Town
First Sunday of Lent
March 13, 2011

“The LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.”  Genesis 2:7-9
I am truly amazed as I watch my little baby, Eric, who is now five-months old.  T goes without saying that we were blessed when God gave him the “breath of life” and brought him into the world.  But what amazes me when I watch Eric at this age is that he can't get enough of life. He is fascinated by everything and everyone around him. He stares intently at his older brother and watches him play and talks and run. He watches the trees blow in the breeze and he listens to the sounds of dogs barking on the street. He discovers his own hands, his own feet, his own reflection, and your smiling face. He experiences delight – and sometimes disgust – as we feed him new foods.  Every little detail of life is so interesting to him that, even at his most tired, he doesn't want to sleep since he doesn't want to stop experiencing life even for a moment.
To me, Lent is a time to stop and reflect on your life - - to challenge yourself to look at your life with a completely new, unbiased eye, as if you are seeing it for the very first time (like Eric).  It is a time to examine, to take stock, and most importantly, to make the changes we need to make (no matter how hard those changes may be). God breathed life into each one of for a reason, and it is up to us to not only figure out what that purpose is, but to live it.
Melissa Suster
Dear God, please open my ears so that I may hear what you are telling me, open my eyes so that I may see what you are showing me, and open my heart to give me the courage to act when I need to act.
