Day 14 - Prayer & Fasting - Family

Today's Scripture Passage: Exodus 20:12, Mark 10:8-9, Ephesians 6:4

“Exodus 20:12: Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Mark 10:8-9: 8and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." Ephesians 6:4: 4Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord

Today's Scripture Message:

A commitment to our Parents is Love, Honor & Respect; to our spouses Love, Honor & Cherish,  to our children Love, Nurture & Protect.  By taking the experience of our time with our parents and using the lessons learned in each experience in love and understanding as our directive for our lives honors our parents and the memory of our lineage. To Honor our spouse is to love & care for him/her as much as we love & care for ourselves. To grow as one unit supportive, loving and caring of each other until death. To refuse division & temptation…to be an inseparable team. Commitment to our children is to raise them in reverence of our faith,  respective of our lineage & better than our own upbringing that our descendants grow stronger than those who preceded them.  Honor your commitments…strengthen your family…forward His kingdom.

Prayer for the day:
Father keep the lessons of our youth, guided by your hand in remembrance of our ancestors.  Humble our hearts to love, care & understanding that we, in our walk with our spouse be inseparable in any circumstance in preservation of our family unit. Grant us balance in the rearing of our children that we bring them up focused on you, in love, care & respect of themselves and others, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thought for the day:
“The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works is the family.”
~Lee Iacocca

Goal for the Day:
Take the focus off of the problems & refocus on the members.

Pastor Dickow’s Fast from Wrong Thinking
Revolution Day 14:

Today we’re fasting from the thought that says, “I can’t succeed when things are this bad.” So often, we allow the things happening around us to influence what happens through us.  Times may be look tough through the media’s world view, but we need to look through God’s world view.

Let’s change it today:

1.       See the GOOD in BAD times. When the economy is bad, it’s our opportunity to see that God is our true source. When there was total darkness in Egypt, there was light for the children of God. (Exodus 10:23).

2.      Believe the love God has for you. Deuteronomy 23:5 says the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you because the LORD your God loves you.

3.      Learn the secret of turning bad into good. LOVE GOD. Romans 8:28 says, “All things work together for good to those who LOVE GOD and are called...” Remember, the greatest force of success in life is love. 1 Corinthians 13:8 says love never fails.

4.      The TURN-AROUND GOD is with you! Psalm 107:35 says He turns the dry land into springs of water = gushing fountains that break forth and flow continually, diffusing fertility and beauty everywhere.

5.      Remember: Seed meets need. God lacked children, so He sowed His only Son, and reaped countless sons and daughters. (John 3:16) Sow your best seeds in tough times and things will get better.

THINK IT & SAY IT:

I expect supernatural success in tough times. God is my source and brings me light in dark times. I expect bad times to turn into good for me because God loves me; and because I love Him, all things work for my good. My life gushes forth fruitfulness and beauty everywhere, as I plant good seeds today, in Jesus’ Name.

Daily Lenten Reflection from St. Michael of Old Town

Tuesday of the Second Week of Lent
March 22, 2011

“Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.”   Matthew 23:2-4.

Growing up a cradle Catholic, I learned our traditions from a very young age. I attended parochial grade school and received all the sacraments. As an adolescent my family slowly grew away from the church, not finding God’s comfort in their religious practices. I think they heard more about His punishment than His love and mercy. During my own difficulties as an adult, I felt the desire to return to my faith, but to go much deeper than simply following the basics I had learned of attending Mass, communion and confession. I began to seek more understanding of our faith through scripture study, retreats and centering prayer. I found that by participating in the Mass as a lector I was much more engaged with the readings and teachings. I sought out volunteering opportunities that deeply touched my own heart and used my true talents rather than just doing something out of obligation.

Many of us get caught up in ourselves begin going through the religious motions as the Pharisees did, ”paying our dues” to God so to speak instead of opening our hearts to the love He has planted within us. To love others humbly and genuinely requires more work than simply following our standard practices but it is what Jesus always brings us back to in the gospel stories and what will bring us back to Him.

Liz Russell

Heavenly Father, you sent your Son Jesus to be one of us and bring us back to your love and mercy.  You sent the Holy Spirit to keep the fire of your love within us. Let us be drawn deeply into the spiritual life and never treat our faith life as a chore.  Amen.
