Day 10 - Prayer & Fasting - Communication Part I

Today's Scripture Passage: Proverbs 16:23-24

23 The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction.  24 Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Today's Scripture Message:

One of the most powerful tools granted to humans is the ability to verbally communicate. Even a baby, can express it’s thoughts through smiles and cries, letting us know exactly how they are feeling & if they are in need, but unlike babies, who’s only means of communication comes from emotional outbursts, we as adults have means to express ourselves clearly, respectfully and humbly that what we intently express is not only received, but positively absorbed. How effective are you at communicating with others?  How carefully are the words you utter chosen? What consideration is there for the person you are addressing, no matter their authority over or under you?  Good or bad, the force of your words become staples in the hearts & minds of others. An effective communicator speaks clearly, confidently and always in respect of his audience, even if that audience consists of 1 member.

Prayer for the day:
Father, help my speech to always be a tool that instructs and motivates, not destroys and divides. Keep me conscious of those I address and courageous enough to state my point heartily, but humbly. In all that I say, I will do so with you in mind, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thought for the day:
"One of the best rules in conversation is never to say a thing which any of the company can reasonably wish had been left unsaid"

 ~Jonathan Swift

Goal for the Day
Make the stamp of your words prevalent & positive so their permanency is favorable.

Pastor Dickow’s Fast from Wrong Thinking
Revolution Day 10:

Today we’re fasting from the thought that says, “More money will make me happy.” While it seems like ‘lack’ and poverty cause much stress--money is not the stress reliever. God’s Word is.

 Let’s change it today:

1.      Re-define the source of happiness. The supreme happiness in life is the assurance that you are loved!  (Mark 1:11) Jesus’ knowledge of God’s love for Him, made Him the happiest man in the world! (Hebrews 1:9)

2.     Stop condemning yourself. Romans 14:22 says, “HAPPY IS THE MAN WHO DOES NOT CONDEMN HIMSELF.” Jesus declares you righteous. Reject condemning thoughts.

3.     Love the anointing of God, not money. (Hebrews 1:9) Jesus was ANOINTED with joy beyond others. You have that same anointing—1 John 2:27.

4.     Ask God for wisdom and understanding. That will bring true happiness. Proverbs 3:13 says, “Happy is the man who finds wisdom and understanding.”

5.     Recognize the root of riches. WISDOM produces wealth and riches (Proverbs 8:18). GET WISDOM.

6.     Be a giver. You are more happy when you are giving. (Acts 20:35). And giving will always lead to receiving—Luke 6:35.

THINK IT & SAY IT:
My happiness doesn’t come from money—it comes from knowing I am loved by God. I refuse to condemn myself and therefore I expect to walk in divine happiness. I love the anointing and walk in the joy of the Lord. I receive wisdom from God every day, resulting in happiness and riches, in Jesus’ Name!

Daily Lenten Reflection from
St. Michael of Old Town

Friday of the First Week of Lent
March 18, 2011

“If you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”  Mt 5: 23-24

There’s a scene from a movie that I enjoy in which a man is kneeling in prayer in an empty church.  An acquaintance of his walks in, leans over and taps him on the shoulder.  Without opening his eyes the kneeling man growls, “I'm praying, damn you.”  The irony here is fairly obvious.

Yet, in our reading today from Matthew Christ tells us that, “if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”  Christ reminds us that we cannot be at peace with Him unless we are at peace with one another.  At times it’s easy to slip into the “me and Jesus” practice of spirituality.  Personally, I can remember being particularly annoyed when a roommate would ask a favor of me during my “personal time” to read scripture or pray in the mornings before class.  But my faith cannot only be about my personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

In today’s reading Christ reminds us of the necessity of the horizontal, or communal, dimension to our faith.  The Catholic Church incorporates this brilliantly into our lives in the sacrament of confession.  It is there that we go to be reconciled with the Church, the Body of Christ, our brothers and sisters as well as with God.  It is in confession that we call to mind the common bond that we share with every other human being on the planet, namely: our brokenness, our need for healing and our need for forgiveness.

Tim Arnold
Lord Jesus, you know that often in my efforts to know more about you I often miss knowing you.  Help me, this Lenten season, to grow in love with you by growing in love with those around me.  For you are source of all truth and all goodness and all beauty.  May I reflect you in every personal encounter that I make today.    Amen.

The simplest thing in life is to learn to change and life will reveal answers at the pace God wishes to do so. Realize that the transformation you seek can only occur when you change something you do daily. The wonderful aspect to the mysteries of life is that it can be on a continuous stroll with a beautiful harmonious sound echoing in the wind when you fully figure out that actions supersede words when taking that next step…Lin
