Today's Scripture Passage: Proverbs 19:18
18 Discipline your children, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to their death.
Today's Scripture Message:
Here is another time I hear the echoing of my mother and grandmother and their many sayings “If I didn’t love you, I would let you do what you please, but that is not how this works” oh, if I had a dollar for every time I heard that one! As my kids grow older and they shy away from those “public kisses on the cheek” because they are too old and are at that age where “whatever” seems to want to leap out of their mouths when you instruct them to do something…I hear myself repeating that phrase – that loving “No”, “I’m sorry, but until you can do (whatever it was at that moment), you cannot ____”. Of course you get the anger, and the tears and the “please Mommy/Daddy’s…I won’t/will” and even though your heart wants to give in…DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE A FIRM PARENT NOW SO YOU ARE NOT DEALING WITH THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT BEING FIRM ENOUGH LATER.
I have and am dealing with adults, who’s parent’s would tell them “NO” but back out of it or allow them to skate around the instruction until they “felt” like doing it and the end result is an adult that learns to maneuver around what they are supposed to do until they hit a wall or step out of bounds and end up in circumstances that they cannot retreat from. No is a good word to learn, use and enforce in balance with what you expect from a child in the premise that “NO” always means just that and not “MAYBE”.
Prayer for the day:
Father, keep your arms firmly wrapped around parents and children that responsibilities are lovingly adhered to and the future of all of our children are strong representations of your kingdom. That all they are to be is all that was purposed for them and the evils of this world fall away from them like rain on an umbrella, let their hearts know the glory of the presence of you in their lives, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Thought for the day:
“If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.”
~ Abigail Van Buren
Goal for the Day:
Love your child and all children within your care so much that correction is a necessity and not an issue.
