12 For this is what the LORD says: "I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees.
13 As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem." 14 When you see this, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like grass; the hand of the LORD will be made known to his servants, but his fury will be shown to his foes.
Today’s Scripture Message:
Growing up, we sang the song, It Is Well With My Soul by HoratioG. Spafford, which begins: “When peace, like a river, attendeth myway, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thouhast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.” Thesewere powerful lyrics until I heard the story behind the lyrics of thissong a few weeks ago which really caused each part of this song toresonate stronger than it had previous to my knowing the heart behindthe words. So I had to share it with all of you. Mr. Spafford had asuccessful law practice in Chicago where he and his wife Anna sharedtheir home with many. They led a charmed life and were faithfulChristians. In 1870 their 4 year old son died of scarlet fever…in 1871the Great Chicago Fire destroyed most of the additional real estate thefamily owned, but their home was spared as was their family. Eventhough their finances were mostly depleted they used their resources tofeed others and help the homeless who’d lost their homes and comfortedtheir grief stricken neighbors who’d lost loved ones. In 1873 Annabecame ill and hoping to benefit her health, the Spafford’s planned a tripto Europe with their 4 daughters. On the day they were to leave via ship,Mr. Spafford had a business emergency and could not leave. Not wantingto disappoint his wife and children he sent them ahead and would follow afew days later. The ship his family was on was hit by a British sailing shipand the boat his wife and children were on sank in the middle of theAtlantic Ocean. His wife Anna survived, their 4 daughters did not. Afterhearing the news of his family’s demise, he immediately left to bring his wifehome. As he sailed past the point where the ship his family was on sunk, hebegan writing the words to this song “It Is Well With My Soul”. The Safford’swent on to begin a Christian colony in Jerusalem that catered to the needyand cared for homeless children. Despite their great loss, they went on to dogreater things. All that you experience isknowledge and growth for the greatness purposed for your life. No matter what,“Whatever our lot” in life…our Father “has taught” us “to say, it is well,it is well with” our “soul”.
